Jnanpith award winning Kashmiri poet and writer, Padma Shri Professor Rahman Rahi is no more. He died on 9 January. Condolences were expressed on the demise of Prof. Rahman Rahi in AMU.
Faculty and students of the Department of Modern Indian Languages, Aligarh Muslim University condoled the demise of Sahitya Akademi and Jnanpith awardee Kashmiri poet and writer, Padma Shri Professor Rahman Rahi. AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Tariq Mansoor said that Prof. Rahi was a great litterateur who devoted his life to exploring new areas of Kashmiri language and literature. The AMU community extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends.
Head of Department Prof. Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar said that Professor Rahi was widely popular among his students and colleagues. He was an ideal teacher, a great poet, critic and a unique interpreter of Kashmiri literature. He made immense contribution to Kashmiri language and literature. He was always receptive to new ideas. He is no longer with us but his honesty and compassion for all will always be remembered. Teachers, research scholars and students of the department participated in the condolence meeting.

Rahman Rahi was born on May 6, 1925 in Srinagar, he became a clerk in the Public Works Department in 1948. From 1964 he taught as a professor in the Persian department of Kashmir University. He received the Padma Shri in 2002 and the Jnanpith Award in 2004 from the Government of India. He translated many works of Dr. Faustus and Baba Farid etc. from English to Kashmiri.
